Inkwell vs Obsidian

the short version

Obsidian gives you local markdown files and a plugin ecosystem to build with. Inkwell gives you the assembled system, including the billing side Obsidian was never meant to cover.

Which one should you use?

Obsidian is the better tool if owning plain files locally matters most and you enjoy assembling your own system from plugins. Inkwell is the better tool if you want that system to already exist — with time tracking, invoicing and client portals built in rather than added.

What Obsidian is better at

Obsidian's core promise is one Inkwell cannot match: your notes are plain markdown files on your own disk, readable without Obsidian and outlasting it. That is a real form of ownership, and for anyone whose notes are a life's work it is the right trade. Its plugin ecosystem is deep, its graph view predates ours, and if you enjoy building your own system it is the better raw material.

Pick Obsidian if…

  • Local plain-text files you own outright is the deciding factor
  • You enjoy assembling a system from plugins
  • Notes and linked thinking are the main job
  • You want it to work with no account and no connection

Pick Inkwell if…

  • You want the system to exist already rather than be built
  • The week includes clients, hours and invoices, not only notes
  • You would rather not maintain a plugin stack
  • You want a client to see a portal, not a shared folder

Common questions

Does Inkwell work offline like Obsidian?

No. Inkwell is a web app and needs a connection. Offline capture is something we are exploring rather than something on the roadmap — it is the one thing paper still does better, and it is hard to do well. If offline is a requirement, Obsidian is the honest answer.

Can I export my notes out of Inkwell?

Yes. Ask us any time for a full Markdown and JSON export including attachments, and one-click self-serve export is on the roadmap. You always own your content — but Obsidian's files-on-your-disk model is still a stronger form of ownership than any export, and we would rather say that plainly.

Inkwell has a graph view too — is it the same thing?

Similar idea, different scope. Obsidian's graph maps links between notes. Inkwell's mind-map spans projects, tasks, notes, tags and people, so it shows where the work is overloaded rather than only how the writing connects.

Try it

The whole personal notebook is free forever for one person, with no card — see what's free and what's paid. If you want the reasoning behind the one-notebook idea rather than the feature list, we did the arithmetic of tool sprawl.

Other comparisons

  • Inkwell vs Notion — Notion is a better wiki. Inkwell is a better week — it tracks the hours and raises the invoice.
  • Inkwell vs Toggl — Toggl tracks time beautifully. Inkwell tracks it inside the project you're billing for.
  • Inkwell vs Linear — Linear is built for software teams shipping product. Inkwell is built for one person with a mixed week.
  • For freelancers — Projects, tracked hours, invoices and a portal per client — in one place instead of five.
