Inkwell vs Linear

the short version

Linear is better for a software team's issue tracking. Inkwell is better for one person whose work isn't only issues — it holds the hours, the invoices and the clients too.

Which one should you use?

Linear is the better tool for a software team shipping product — its issue tracking, cycles and triage are faster and more focused than anything here. Inkwell is the better tool for one person whose week is not only engineering work, because it also holds time, invoices, clients and a journal.

What Linear is better at

Linear is the fastest, most keyboard-native issue tracker most engineers have used, and the interaction design is genuinely first-class. Cycles, triage, roadmaps and its GitHub integration are built for how software teams actually ship, and Inkwell has nothing equivalent. If you are a team of engineers and the work is issues, Linear is the right tool and this page is not trying to talk you out of it.

Pick Linear if…

  • You are a software team and the work is issues and cycles
  • You want tight GitHub or GitLab integration
  • Triage, sprints and roadmaps are how you plan
  • Several engineers need to work in the same tracker

Pick Inkwell if…

  • You are one person, and engineering is only part of the week
  • You bill clients for time and need invoices out of it
  • A day job, client work and a side project all need somewhere to live
  • You want habits, a journal and goals in the same notebook

Common questions

Is Inkwell an issue tracker?

Not in Linear's sense. Inkwell has projects, tasks and sub-tasks with milestones, which covers a solo workload well. It has no cycles, no triage queue and no Git integration, so if you are running sprints with other engineers, Linear is the better fit.

Can I use both?

Plenty of people would, and that is a reasonable answer: Linear for the engineering work at a day job, Inkwell for the freelance and personal side that the day job's tracker has no business holding. Inkwell doesn't integrate with Linear, so it is two systems rather than one.

Does Linear track time or handle invoices?

Not natively. Linear is focused on issue tracking for software teams and does not try to be a billing tool. Teams that need time and billing usually add a separate tool for it.

Try it

The whole personal notebook is free forever for one person, with no card — see what's free and what's paid. If you want the reasoning behind the one-notebook idea rather than the feature list, we did the arithmetic of tool sprawl.

Other comparisons

  • Inkwell vs Notion — Notion is a better wiki. Inkwell is a better week — it tracks the hours and raises the invoice.
  • Inkwell vs Toggl — Toggl tracks time beautifully. Inkwell tracks it inside the project you're billing for.
  • Inkwell vs Trello — Trello is the simplest shared board there is. Inkwell is what you need when a board stops being enough.
  • For freelancers — Projects, tracked hours, invoices and a portal per client — in one place instead of five.
